What happens when your HVAC system can’t get enough air flowing through the system? It will reduce performance and impact your indoor air quality. That is what happens when you have dirty HVAC air filters.
The Effects of a Dirty HVAC Air Filter
It’s critical that homeowners understand the effects a dirty air filter will have on a home and the people in it:
- If the air filter gets dirty, the dirt goes somewhere. That dirt will deposit on the insides of ducts and HVAC equipment. When the air is flowing through dirty ducts and HVAC equipment, it will reduce the house’s air quality by releasing that dust every time the air conditioning or heating turns on.
- It will reduce airflow through the HVAC system. Reduced airflow through the system means the house isn’t going to be comfortable, and it will take longer to heat or cool. Inadequate airflow also means that indoor pollutants will build up inside the house.
- Reduced airflow through the ducts also creates an environment where mold and mildew can start to take hold. That will cause even more problems with air pollutants in the house.
- A clogged air filter can’t capture allergens that might be in the air. As allergens build up, people in the home are going to feel its effects, often via symptoms like coughing, eye irritation, sore throats, congestion and wheezing. People with asthma or severe allergies may suffer even more.
The fastest and easiest way to correct indoor air quality in your home is to check and replace the air filter regularly. Check the filter at least once a month and replace as needed.
